Pitchfork’s review of U2’s reissue of Achtung Baby Super Deluxe Edition is one of the best reviews I’ve read in a long time. I know I’m in the 1% category of people under 35 who enjoy U2’s music, but Ryan Dombal’s review is so well-written. He captures the deeper elements of Achtung Baby and how pivotal the album was for U2.
They reference the eccentricities and outlandish nature of the Zoo TV tour with this quote from Larry Mullen, Jr.: “‘They’re coming to a rock’n’roll show and watching television, what more can you ask for?’ He’s joking, but as we go to arenas and see singers on big screens through our cellphone cameras, the question begins to answer itself.”
More than 15 years later, I found this quote so relevant. Mainly because of the impossibility of attending a show in 2012 without encountering not only television, but social media, and instant concert photography. I am no exception to this.
On a related note, the things included in the Super Deluxe Edition are ridiculous. Just know that whoever purchases this can rock their own sunglasses a la The Fly. Retails for $130.
